Why the Serengeti Migration Occurs
The wildebeest migration is a wildlife spectacle with over 2 million migratory animals moving clockwise through the Serengeti, Masai Mara, northern Ngorongoro, Maswa Game Reserve & Loliondo Controlled Area. These animals migrate for survival, moving towards favorable ecosystems based on the availability of green pastures, water, mineral-enriched plains, and short grass.
Best Time to See (Highlights of the Migration)
The great wildebeest migration happens year in & year out. Travelers and stakeholders argue that the best times to see the migration are during the calving season (December to March) and the Mara River crossing (July to October).
- Calving Season (December to March): Witness wildebeest and zebras giving birth and nurturing their newborns in southern Serengeti & northern Ngorongoro.
- Mara River Crossing (July to October): Experience the thrilling sight of wildebeests crossing the Mara River in search of green pastures in Masai Mara.
It is recommended to visit in February for calving and August for the Mara River crossing.
Migration Cycle & Map
The great Serengeti wildebeest migration happens throughout the year & through the years means its path/cycle is known and can be predicted but not to the precise timings as changes in weather can affect the timing but still likely to fall on the time range.
Our Wildebeest Migration Tour Packages
We have special migration packages which will follow the migration depending on the season & where the migration is at the time. Our migration tours start from 3 – 8 days which will provide ample time to witness this spectacle but the time required is dependent on where migration is at, hence short duration once in Ndutu (south Serengeti & longer duration once northern Serengeti).
